# How Fieldwerk and your AI's memory work together

Your AI remembers what it picks up. Fieldwerk keeps what you choose to save. They do different jobs, and they work best together: memory carries your AI's sense of you from chat to chat, and Fieldwerk holds the knowledge you've decided is worth keeping, where you, your team and any AI you connect can read it.

## What your AI's memory does

Most AI tools now carry some context between chats. That memory is a short summary the AI chooses to keep, it belongs to that one AI tool, and how much of it you can see or change depends on the tool. It's good at the small things: how you like answers written, what you're working on this month, the names that keep coming up.

## What Fieldwerk does

Fieldwerk holds what you or your AI save at your direction, as memos.

- **You choose what goes in.** Nothing from your chats is saved unless you or your AI save it. Plenty of chats are throwaway, and that's fine.

- **You can see and fix all of it.** Every memo is plain Markdown that you can read, edit and download. Every change is kept, with who made it, so you can see what changed and restore an earlier version. See [See and restore earlier versions of a memo](https://help.fieldwerk.ai/pncsjucznc/see-and-restore-earlier-versions.md).

- **It works with any AI.** Claude, ChatGPT and any other AI you connect read the same memos, so switching tools doesn't mean starting over.

- **Your team can share it.** Share a memo or a collection and your teammates, and their AIs, work from the same knowledge. See [Share a memo with a link or with people](https://help.fieldwerk.ai/tl52qpf3a2/share-a-memo-with-a-link.md).

- **You choose what comes back.** You bring a memo or collection into the chats where it's useful, by pasting its link or asking your AI to find it. Nothing is pushed into every chat. See [Bring a memo or collection into any chat](https://help.fieldwerk.ai/ae94aluice/bring-a-memo-or-collection-into.md).

## How they work together

Use each for what it's good at.

- **Let memory keep the small things.** Preferences, tone, what you're in the middle of.

- **Save the things worth keeping to Fieldwerk.** Decisions, plans, research, guides and prompts: anything you'd want to read again, correct, share or hand to another chat.

- **Let memory point to Fieldwerk.** Tell your AI where things live, such as "our project plans are in the Planning collection in Fieldwerk", and it can find the full, current version when it needs it, rather than relying on a summary.

When the two disagree, the memo is the version you can check and correct, so it's the one to trust.

## Try it

At the end of a useful chat:

```prompt
In Fieldwerk, look at what we've worked out in this chat and suggest what's worth keeping as a memo. Show me a draft, list my collections and ask which one to save it in, and only save it once I agree.
```
