Memos

Updated 2 November 2026

Format a memo with headings, tables, images and more

Type / on a new line to add a block, such as a heading, a list or a table, or just type Markdown and watch it turn into formatting. Select text to style it. Every memo is stored as Markdown, so what you see in the editor is exactly what your AI reads and writes, and what you get when you download it. Structure pays off twice: headings let people and AI tools jump straight to the section they need, and tables and task lists give them something precise to update.

Add a block with the slash menu

Type / and pick from the menu, or keep typing to filter it:

  • Heading 1, Heading 2, Heading 3

  • Bullet list and Numbered list

  • Task list, for tick boxes

  • Quote

  • Code block, with a language picker for colouring code

  • Table, which starts as three columns and three rows with a header row

  • Divider

  • Image, which opens a file picker

If you already know Markdown, type it instead. ## at the start of a line becomes a heading, - a bullet, 1. a numbered list, > a quote and three backticks a code block, as you type. Typing : followed by a word suggests emoji.

Format text

Select some text and a toolbar appears with Bold, Italic, Underline, Strikethrough, Inline code, Superscript, Subscript, Link, Clear formatting and Comment. Turn into changes the whole block, for example from text to a heading or a list.

Move, copy and change blocks

Hover over a block and click its handle (Block options) to:

  • Turn into another kind of block.

  • Duplicate, Move to top or Move to bottom, or Delete it.

  • Copy link to heading or Copy link to block, to send someone straight to that spot.

  • Comment on it.

Work with tables

Click into a table and open its menu to Add row above or Add row below, Add column before or Add column after, move, duplicate or delete a row or column, align a column (Align left, Align center, Align right), or Delete table.

Add and size images

Use Image in the slash menu, or drag an image file into the memo. Images can be PNG, JPEG, WebP or GIF, up to 5 MB each.

To change how an image sits, open its Block options:

  • Width: Fit keeps it in the text column; Wide lets it spread out.

  • Size: Original size, Small, Medium, Large or Full.

  • Align: Left, Centre or Right.

You can also drag an image's edges to resize it.

Show a table of contents

Open the memo's menu (More) and choose Show contents. A contents list built from your headings appears beside the memo. Hide contents closes it.

Present a memo

Choose Start presentation from the memo's menu to show the memo as slides, full screen. Each Divider starts a new slide, so put a divider between the parts you want on separate slides. The first image on a slide gets its own panel beside the text. Use the arrow keys, Space or Enter to move between slides and Esc to leave.

Have your AI do it

Because a memo is Markdown, your AI, once connected (see Connect Claude to Fieldwerk or Connect ChatGPT to Fieldwerk), can restructure it as easily as write it:

Try this with your AI assistant
In Fieldwerk, turn a list in one of my memos into a table. Ask me which memo and which part, suggest the columns, then make the change.

Dividers also split a memo into slides. See Present a memo as slides.
